The star here is Nilotica shea butter — the East African variety that grows along the Nile River Valley in Uganda and South Sudan. It has a naturally higher concentration of essential fatty acids than its more common West African counterpart, which means it melts into skin faster, absorbs more completely, and delivers deeper, longer-lasting moisture. It's the reason this butter never feels heavy.

Alongside it is mafura butter, pressed from the seeds of the Cape Mahogany tree across Southern Africa. It's been used for generations in Mozambique and Zimbabwe for its skin-softening properties. Research published in the South African Journal of Botany identifies its high proportions of oleic and palmitic acids as skin permeation enhancers — meaning it doesn't just sit on top of your skin it actually drinks it in.

Mongongo seed oil, cold-pressed from a nut harvested across Southern Africa, brings vitamins E and D along with linoleic acid to help the skin hold onto moisture. And Kalahari melon seed oil — pressed from the wild ancestor of the common watermelon, native to southern Africa's arid desert — is lightweight, fast-absorbing, and rich in linoleic acid and antioxidants that support the skin's ability to stay moisturized. It contains roughly twice the essential fatty acids of argan oil.

Rounding out the formula is coconut oil, a deeply familiar emollient that softens and smooths and helps the whole blend melt evenly into skin.
